May 19, 2020 · PPTP. The Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is an older method of VPN encryption designed by Microsoft, which goes all the way back to Windows 95. The Port Forwarding option in our Windows, Mac, Linux and Android software can be used to potentially optimize torrent performance. Enable Port Forwarding: In order to enable port forwarding in our PIA app, first disconnect from the VPN. Latest Client (v1.0 and newer): Right-click the PIA Tray icon and select "Settings". PPTP: set the local port to 1723 and protocol to TCP for the PPTP itself, and port 47 and protocol “Other” for the GRE tunnel. IPSec: for the IPSec VPN tunnel, set the local port to 500 and protocol to UDP, and port 4500 with UDP protocol for the IPSec tunnel. OpenVPN: local port set to 1194 and protocol to UDP. L2TP & PPTP Outdated and not secure tunneling protocols L2TP, sometimes available as a slightly improved L2TP/IPSec, and PPTP are both old-school tunneling protocols. They are obsolete and do not offer adequate security, which is why we highly recommend to avoid both of them. PPTP is also vulnerable to bit-flipping attacks, i.e. an attacker can modify PPTP packets without possibility of detection. OpenVPN with AES encryption is a much more secure choice.
